The storm is still over the next hill.

Four cave surveyors check weather, lights, and a field map before entering a cave
The entrance is dry. The forecast is not.

Mara folds the weather printout into the map case. Above the cave, the sky is bright. Beyond the next ridge, a rain band is moving toward them.

The four-person survey team has one job: map the unfinished side passage and be back at the trailhead by 12:30.

Mara uncaps her pencil. There is room for one last line at the top of the page.

“What do I write?” she asks.
